As with other aspects of the services offered by First Marine, our work in e-business draws on our experience in other fields such as shipyard performance improvement and the design and implementation of management systems.

We work closely with our clients to specify e-business solutions which are then coded and web enabled by our partnering developers or by our client's own developers.

One such solution is the information system for the Society of Maritime Industries www.maritimeindustries.org. This system provides essential market information to marine equipment suppliers, it improves communication in the UK's marine equipment industry and seeks to give UK companies a competitive edge by making it easy for buyers to locate equipment and find the information they require.

The system, which is a synthesis of the SocMar site, individual company websites and an extranet provided by Lloyd's Register Fairplay, was conceived by First Marine following extensive market research on behalf of the industry. In addition to project managing its development, we were responsible for producing key aspects of the site logic and content.

As it is becoming increasingly important for shipbuilders, ship repairers and marine equipment manufacturers and suppliers to have an effective website, we have developed a benchmarking tool to assess such sites and to provide guidance to companies wishing to maximise the commercial advantage they gain from the Internet. The benchmarking system is quick to apply and a company can readily have a clear indication of what is required to ensure that its site is properly market-focussed before embarking

on a potentially expensive development.
